Year 3 & 4 Timor Leste Bargain Bazaar

Today at our school was our fantastic market day ‘Timor Leste Bargain Bazaar’. This was part of our Inquiry unit for term 4. The students needed to create a business to help raise money for our sister school in Timor Leste. It was a fabulous day. The teachers were blown away with what the students had created. Some of the store included,

  • Lolly Land
  • Cupcake Queens
  • General Store
  • Face Painting
  • Lemonade
  • Sip n Slice
  • Ned’s Jelly
  • Lollies R Us
  • Flip a coin
  • and many more…..

After a busy 2 hours of selling items it was time for the students to count their earnings with some help from their teachers. Overall we teachers were amazed at how much the students raised for our sister school in Timor Leste.

Our grand total was

$2068.15

Genius Hour

Class 4EK is taking part in Genius Hour. If you are wondering what it is watch the video below.

The students in 4EK are given one hour of class time to research and investigate a topic that they like. But the topic that they investigate must follow the three rules

  • There needs to be a question that they want to answer that can not be answered by Google.
  • They must do research on their topic
  • They need to share their findings with others.

Within 4EK some students are working individually and others are working in pairs. Some of the questions being investigated include:

  • What is the impact of nuclear energy on humans?
  • Investigating how code works and creating own coding script using Java.
  • The process that chocolate goes through from the plant to the shops.
  • Is fruit healthy for you?
  • Tropical Diseases
  • Natural Disasters
  • Our Solar System
  • Different ways of producing art
  • What it takes to produce and write a song

These are just some of the topics that students within 4EK will be investigating

Catia 100WC – Week 9

Lola the powerful superhero who was trying to beat the storm. The violent storm was crashing the wonderful city of London. Lola the superhero was trying so hard to beat the violent storm but she had no luck. As soon as Lola got inside she called the other superhero’s to see if they could help. Lucky 18 of them were already on the way to the storm. Unfortunately all 18 of them got killed in the powerful storm, except Lola, she broke the storm and saved London.  Lola was very proud of herself. She had saved everyone from being killed. Lola was crowned the best superhero ever!

Making our own QR Codes

Yesterday our class we got to make our own QR codes. We made codes to allow us to put a direct link into our portfolios for our parents to see the fantastic learning we did last term.

Operation Christmas Child

We are heading into a very special time of year for a lot of children…..

CHRISTMAS

But the sad thing is, a lot of children from all around the world go without a present.

Operation Christmas Child is a unique project of Samaritan’s Purse Australasia-Operation Christmas Child Limited that brings Good News and Great Joy to kids in need through a simple shoebox filled with gifts.
Every year, generous people, schools, churches and businesses pack shoeboxes with gifts. No matter how old or how young you are, get involved and make a difference to a child who has nothing. A shoebox is far more than just a gift …it opens up a world of life-changing opportunities for the child, their family and their community.

The year 4 students have the opportunity to help out and provide a gift for a child less fortunate than themselves.

Globally, more than 100 million shoeboxes have been given to kids in need in more than 130 countries since 1993.

 

Tellagami – Healthy Lifestyle Commercial

As part of our IBL unit for this term we have been looking at ways we can live a healthy lifestyle. The students in 4EK have been using the app Tellagami to create a short 30 second commercial explaining ways they can live a healthy lifestyle.

Developmental Stages in the Human Lifespan

As part of our Inquiry Topic this term we have been looking at the different developmental stages in the human lifespan. We have been focusing on the stages from pregnancy to old age.  Earlier this week we brainstormed everything we know about each of the different stage in the human lifespan. This was a great activity because every student was able to have their say and write what they knew onto the poster.

This lesson was followed by an incursion with Lisa Hughes discussing the circle of life and the importance of maintaining a healthy body. Lisa also took the students through the stages that occur during pregnancy. This was very fascinating learning about how small the embryo is and how it develops into the foetus. The students where amazed at the way the babies body changes when inside the mother’s womb. Below is the diagram Lisa created to help the students visualise their knowledge and understandings.

We are looking forward to the Year 3 and 4 Parent and Student nights next week on Human Sexuality with Lisa Hughes. These will be held both Tuesday 3rd September and  and Wednesday 4th September at 7pm in the hall. Look forward to seeing all there.

Buddies2 Incursion

Today we had an incursion run by Brainstorm Productions called Buddies 2. This program focus was on Internet Safety, Cyber Bullying, Positive Relationships, Teasing, Exclusion, Rumours, Friendship, Assertiveness, Social Skills, Conflict Resolution, Anger Management, Resilience, Empathy.

It was a fantastic production where the students where laughing and learning alot from the performance. It took the students on a journey through technology and computer games. It allowed students to gain an understanding on making the right choices online and in the playground.

Australian Healthy Eating Guide

Last week we were learning about the Australian Guide to Healthy Eating. We where concentrating on the 5 food groups, and how we need to make sure we eat a range of food to help our body function correctly.

We used the app ‘Nearpod’ to help us understand the 5 food groups a little better in using this app it provided us with a food group quiz. Make sure you click on the link and try it out for yourself.

The Science of Happiness – An Experiment in Gratitude

This week 4EK took part in the Science of Happiness – An Experiment in Gratitude, as part of our explanation writing. We wanted to increase the happiness within our class and learn of ways to make ourselves happy when we are feeling down.
We watched the video then thought about someone who inspires us. Then we wrote down everything about this person and shared it with the class. This resulted in a lot of happy tears. The students then went home and read what they had written to the person who inspired them. Below are some examples of what the students wrote about the person who inspires them.

Lucas-
My grandfather Peter lives with my grandmother Virginia and is very religious. He has four kids and ten grandchildren I have never seen one argument between my grandparents he is very important to me.
My grandfather Peter is kind, forgiving and always ready to help someone in need. He has been very helpful especially in the past year with my diabetes. He incredibly patient and has an amazing sense of humour mixed in with lots of respect and care.

Sophie-
The person I look up too is my mum Jane. She is a mother of three and married to my daddy Andrew. Mum is a teacher two days a week. She is always there for me she is loving and caring and she always forgives me and never gives up. She is always trying her best and make time for everyone in the family and she still makes dinner and breakfast for me everyday. She takes my brothers and me to sports and school and supports the whole family. My mum is a super and I would be and lost with out her. I love you mum and I will always.

Dom-
The person that I inspire the most is my Mum. She never lets me down, she is always there for me, I trust her and she trusts me too. I love her a lot and she loves me too.
My Mum will always keep me safe, she looks after me everyday. I love her so much I will never forget her in my life, no matter what.

Tom-
My Auntie Tunta is someone who inspires me because she has done so much in her life. She is still going to work to teach German at a primary school even though she has to go to the hospital every week for Dialysis. She is also a Cancer survivour. She also has a wonderful son called Jacob who is deaf.
My Auntie is on a list for a kidney and she has to wait five years. She has to go to the hospital a couple of days a week, throughout everything she is always has a smile on her face.
My Auntie Tunta had her birthday on July the 12th last month. She is one person who inspires me the most because she is so strong and positive.
